Everything has a story. That fact becomes unavoidable as you enter Moxmoe Pictures Famous Sandwiches, a hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop nestled between Trek Bicycle and the Fine Wine & Good Spirits store at the Benner Pike Shops. From the illustrated posters that explain the origins of the Moxmoe name to the way the sandwiches are named and even the personalities attributed to every order, it’s clear that a lot of thought has gone into everything.
According to Maurice “Moe” Thompson, who started Moxmoe in November 2024 with his wife, Kate, the shop should be a place where people are inspired to tell their stories through food. That’s why they offer an extensive menu of ingredients that let you be as minimal or wildly creative with your sandwich as you want to be. Each story starts with four types of homemade breads and wrap options, and all the classic meats, cheeses, and veggies you could want, and, most importantly, a staggering 27 sauces and spreads, of which 16 are made in house according to the Thompson’s own recipes.
If you’re ordering a build-your-own sandwich for the first time, we recommend asking for a sauce flight so you can sample some of the sauces. We especially liked the Screaming Ghost (not as spicy as the name may suggest), Sweet Jack BBQ, and Cajun sauces. The sauce options run the gamut from mild to spicy, sweet to tangy, and vinegary to creamy, so you’re sure to find something that suits your tastes.
Any of the sandwiches can be toasted, but if you’re in the mood for an actual warm sandwich, Moxmoe offers a variety of cheesesteaks starting at 4 p.m. There are five “signature” cheesesteaks to choose from and, of course, a build-it-yourself option. The cheesesteaks come served on an 8-inch Amoroso roll. We tried their top-selling Big City cheesesteak, consisting of tender sliced beef, American cheese, sweet peppers, onions, and mayo. It’s not loaded with ingredients like some places offer, but the ingredients really shine, and the mayo elevates the flavors. If you’re looking for a vegetarian option, try the Grilling in the Greenhouse, which comes with mushrooms and a variety of sweet and hot peppers and American cheese.
Over the last few years, Moe and Kate have designed, refined, and perfected a series of sandwiches they call their “classics.” Their most popular to date is the Big MoeJo, which is their take on a spicy Italian. It’s stacked with pepper jack cheese, ham, salami, capicola, pepperoni, tomato, onions, lettuce, mayo, cherry pepper relish, a blend of spices, and their house dressing. Beyond being just spicy, it’s an explosion of flavors that satisfies with every bite. We tried it on their Cheesy Everything Bread, which adds another layer of flavor.
As with everything at Moxmoe, each of their classic sandwiches tells a story, from the thrill of highway adventures to exploring the open spaces and even the depths of the sea or enjoying a quiet moment in your favorite lawn chair. We embarked on a highway journey with the Highway Dreaming, layers and layers of tender roast beef and provolone on white bread. Next up was the Lawn Chair Legend. Even the most fervent adventurer needs to relax and put their feet up every now and then, and what better way to do that than with provolone, chicken, and bacon? We tried it on wheat. The cucumber slices add a bit of freshness and crunch.

The surprisingly robust menu really has something for everyone and enough options to create a full meal. Start off with one of their house-made soups: broccoli-cheddar, chicken and dumpling, loaded potato, or chili. The loaded potato soup is peppery and creamy with big chunks of bacon, perfect for the cold weather. The chili is mildly spicy but has a wonderfully robust flavor. House-made sides are potato salad and coleslaw. According to Moe, it’s “KFC-style,” and if you’ve been craving a blast of nostalgia, it really does remind you of the colonel’s slaw.
Of course, in the spirit of Choose Your Own Adventure, you can make any of their classic subs into a wrap or salad, or even create your own wrap or salad from the available ingredients. Overwhelmed by all the choices? Ask Moe for recommendations, which sandwiches are better toasted or cold, and what sauce will elevate your experience. He’ll be more than happy to be the assistant director of your story!
No matter what path you take or how your story evolves, we hope you’ll make a detour that includes a taste of Moxmoe Pictures Famous Sandwiches. You’ll be glad you did! T&G

Level Up: How One Childhood Memory Sparked a Movement
It started with a simple plastic cartridge and a grey controller. For 10-year-old Moe Thompson, receiving an unexpected Nintendo game system wasn’t just about video games—it was a lifeline. Raised by a single mother, Moe understood early on that extras were rare. But that act of generosity from a local community organization did more than provide entertainment; it proved that kindness exists, and that he mattered.
That moment of pure, unadulterated childhood joy is the heartbeat of the Moxmoe Pictures Highlight Fund.
Today, Moe is paying that kindness forward, turning his own “highlight reel” into a reality for the next generation. The Fund is dedicated to a singular, powerful mission: empowering single-parent families to create the memories that bind them together.
“We believe every child deserves a highlight—a magical birthday, a holiday feast, or a simple, perfect day out with the parent who loves them most.”
Whether it’s funding a dream birthday party or making a holiday gathering possible, the Highlight Fund steps in to bridge the financial gap. Visit moxmoepictures.com/giving for more information and to nominate someone you think might need some assistance to bring their story to life.
